Chapter 8

Interestingly, Zoe’s Zoo was the result of my being fired from the job I’d had since high school at the county shelter in Ashton Falls after Sheriff Salinger put in a request to the county supervisor to have me removed from my position after he felt that I’d interfered with one of his cases. At the time, I’d been crushed, but shortly after I was fired, the county decided to close the facility in Ashton Falls. Zak, being the awesome guy he is, bought the building. Zak, Jeremy, and I worked together and built the Zoo. We’d started small but continued to expand, and now we were one of the largest and most respected wild and domestic animal rescue and rehabilitation facilities in the States.

Initially, I ran the place with Jeremy’s help, but after marrying and having Catherine, I decided to take a step back and turn things over to Jeremy. I still tried to stop in a few times a month, mainly for no other reason than to have a presence. I missed spending as much time at the Zoo as I once had, but I had a lot going on at home, and trying to work a full-time job on top of everything else really wasn’t a viable option. Still, I liked to pretend I was an active owner, so I checked in with Jeremy whenever I had the opportunity.

“Hey, Zoe, Charlie,” Jeremy greeted us when we entered through the front door. “I didn’t realize you were coming in today.”

“I wasn’t planning to, but I had lunch with Sheriff Salinger, and he brought up the issue with the county manager that I realized I wanted to talk to you about before we end up being blindsided by something we weren’t expecting.”

“I’m not sure we can prepare for a problem that doesn’t yet exist,” he pointed out.

“I guess that’s true, but it’s been a while since we’ve had an inspection, so it occurred to me that we might have gotten lax. If we had to undergo an inspection today, would we pass?”

“Absolutely. The facility is spotless and in perfect repair, and our books are up to date and balanced to the penny. I know you haven’t been able to spend a lot of time down here as of late, and I do remember the nightmare inspections we were forced to endure in the beginning, but I can assure you that if we had an inspection today, we’d pass with flying colors.”

I blew out a breath. “I guess I knew that to be true, but between the situation with Scooter and the uncertainty with a new county manager, I guess I’m spinning out of control a bit.”

“That’s totally understandable. And with two new babies in the house, you must be exhausted.”

I stifled a yawn. “I am. It’s getting better now that we’ve settled into a routine, but I still feel like I could sleep for a week if given the opportunity.”

Jeremy leaned back against the reception desk. “It seems you have free time right now.
